Claude Sonnet 5 Works With EU Data Residency

If you run with EU Data Residency on, Claude Sonnet 5 - Reasoning is now in your picker. It was hidden from EU-only accounts at launch because AWS published Sonnet 5 with a Global inference profile only. AWS has since added an EU profile, so EU requests are geofenced to eu-west-2 instead of being refused — and the model is back on the menu for the accounts that most need a strong coding model.

What you can do

• Pick Claude Sonnet 5 - Reasoning with EU Data Residency on. It carries the blue EU residency dot in the picker, alongside Sonnet 4.6 and the Opus family.
• Get it from Auto. Sonnet 5 is Workhorse-tier, so EU-only accounts can now be routed to it automatically on complex turns rather than topping out at Sonnet 4.6.
• Use it in a Swarm. Multi-agent plans can assign Sonnet 5 to worker steps under EU residency — previously those steps fell back to a lower-quality model.
• Keep the full capability set — 1M-token context, always-on adaptive thinking, 128K max output, Premium band (6×). Nothing about the model changes; only where the request runs.
• See more than Anthropic in Recommended. With EU Data Residency on, the picker's default Recommended list now also surfaces the EU-hosted Qwen routes — Qwen3.8 Max and Qwen3.7 Flash, served directly from Alibaba's eu-central-1 Model Studio endpoint. They only appear there for EU-only accounts; the global Recommended list is unchanged.

Where this shows up

You work under an EU data requirement and you've been pinning Sonnet 4.6 for big refactors because Sonnet 5 simply wasn't in your list. It's there now, at the same token band.

You turned EU Data Residency on and noticed your Auto results got a little weaker on hard coding turns. That was Auto skipping Sonnet 5 for you. It won't any more.

You turned EU Data Residency on and the Recommended list shrank to three Anthropic models with a "limited models" note. It now fills out with the EU-resident Qwen options too — no need to search for them.

Heads up

• Routing differs by mode. With EU Data Residency off, Sonnet 5 still uses the Global profile for throughput. With it on, requests go to the EU profile in eu-west-2. You don't configure this — it follows your residency setting.
• EU routing carries the standard 10% Bedrock EU premium, the same as every other Anthropic model under EU residency.
• Premium band — 6× tokens, unchanged.
