Grok 4.7 — xAI's Frontier Reasoner Takes Over the Recommended Seat
September 22, 2026
xAI's Grok 4.7 is now selectable in Alfrada and takes Grok 4.6's seat on the Recommended strip. It's xAI's flagship for coding, agentic tasks, and knowledge work, and it's built for the jobs that don't finish in one turn — long-running software engineering, and checking its own work before it hands it back. Same 500K context, same Zero Data Retention guarantee, one version newer.
What you can do
- Pin Grok 4.7 from the model picker — it's on Recommended by default, and lives under Closed-Weight SOTA in the full list.
- Hand it a long job — 4.7 is tuned for multi-step software engineering that runs across many turns and files, and for verifying its own output rather than declaring victory early.
- Give it more than text — 500K-token context, plus image and file input.
- Let Auto pick it — Grok 4.7 is eligible for the SOTA tier of Auto routing, so hard tasks can land on it without a manual pin.
- Use it in Swarm — as planner or as a worker alongside other models.
- Keep every request on Zero Data Retention endpoints — Grok 4.7 is served through OpenRouter and Alfrada requires a ZDR-marked endpoint for every call; the model is tagged ZDR in the picker.
Where this shows up
You had Grok 4.6 pinned for hard coding and STEM work. You don't need to do anything differently — 4.7 is the same slot in the picker, one version up, and it's the stronger model on independent third-party scoring (Artificial Analysis rates 4.7 at 46 on its Intelligence Index against 44 for 4.6, and its Coding Agent Index jumps from 47 to 56).
You've been giving Grok the kind of task that takes twenty minutes and touches nine files, and watching it stop halfway convinced it was done. That self-verification behaviour on long-running engineering tasks is exactly what 4.7 targets.
You're building a Swarm and want a strong non-Anthropic, non-OpenAI voice in the debate. Swap Grok 4.6 for 4.7 as your worker or advocate.
Try it
- [Pin Grok 4.7] "Refactor this module across files, keep your reasoning visible, and run the tests after each step — don't tell me it's done until they pass."
- [Pin Grok 4.7] "Read these three papers and the attached dataset and tell me which claims the data actually supports."
- "Swarm Grok 4.7 with Opus 5 and Kimi K3 on this proposal — have them argue it out and synthesize the strongest version."
Heads up
- Grok 4.6 is retired — it no longer appears in the picker. Sessions still pinned to Grok 4.6 keep working; start a new session or re-pin to move to Grok 4.7.
- ZDR is enforced — if OpenRouter has no Zero Data Retention endpoint for Grok 4.7 at request time, Alfrada will not fall back to a retaining endpoint.
- Global route — Grok 4.7 is not offered under EU-only data residency, the same as Grok 4.6.
- No harness numbers yet — Grok 4.6 placed #3 on our own Can it Run Alfrada? harness. 4.7 hasn't been run through it yet, so the leaderboard still shows 4.6; we'll refresh it once 4.7 has a full run.
